Volunteer At Soldiers Delight
Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area is the state of Maryland's number one bio-diversity site, with more than thirty rare, threatened and endangered species of plants and animals. Our mission is to educate the public about SDNEA, and to conserve its ecosystem for future generations. We work hand in hand with the Maryland Park System and Maryland's Department of Natural Resources Wildlife & Heritage program.
There are many ways to volunteer at Soldiers Delight. It really depends upon what your interests are. Here is a rundown:
If you interested in volunteering with our Serpentine Restoration Ecosystem Program (SERP) in the winter, please click here to learn more, or contact our SERP Volunteer Coordinator, Paula Becker. Paula can be reached by calling her office at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ Natural Heritage Program in Annapolis at (410) 260-8568 or emailing her at paula.becker@maryland.gov. SERP restoration events are usually scheduled every other Sunday from December through March.
If you are interested in the possibility of becoming a board member of our Friends Group, Soldiers Delight Conservation, Inc. (SDCI), you may attend one of our board meetings. Our meetings are held approximately the second Thursday of alternating months at 7:00 p.m. at the auditorium of our visitor center, located at 5100 Deer Park Road in Owings Mills, Maryland 21117. Please express your interest in attending a meeting by filling out the contact form at our website or contacting our vice president, Lynell Tobler, at 410-922-9690 for information about the date of our next meeting.
If you would like to contribute your skills to our board without becoming a board member, we could really use the abilities of a student who is looking to earn service learning hours by aiding us in keeping our social media posts up to date. We are also in need of students who are interested creating YouTube videos for us of some of our outreach events. Just contact our vice president, Lynell Tobler, at 410-922-9690 for more information.
To get on the list of volunteers who are scheduled to work the front desk of our visitor center at Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area (SDNEA), (usually Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), you will want to contact the Patapsco Valley State Park Volunteer Coordinator, who can be reached by calling PVSP headquarters at 410-461-5005 during the week, or emailing volunteerpatapsco.dnr@maryland.gov.
If you would like to learn about volunteering with the Scales & Tales animal care program at the Soldiers Delight visitor center, please click here for information.
Come add your elbow grease to our worthy cause. Pitch in to help us in our Serpentine Ecosystem Restoration program, staff the front desk of our visitor center on weekends, or donate an hour or two to lead a nature hike. There are so many ways to get involved and give back to your community by helping to restore this globally rare ecosystem.
